Season 16 Playoff Recap
SWBL Season 16 brought another former franchise era Champion with a new name...
Congratulations to the SWBL Twins on winning the 2018 SWBL Championship, their second in the franchise era (formerly Phillies) and their second in three years. The Twins lineup consisting of Chris Meador, Spencer Bogad, Edloe Donnan, Jimmy Cole, and Will Rath went 7-3 in the regular season, to win the Cardinal Blinds Division and secured the three seed in the playoffs. Once again, that Chris Meador magic brought his team to victory.
The playoffs started out this year with the second ever Wild Card game featuring the Brewers (4 seed) vs. the Yankees (5 seed). In a close matchup, the Brewers held off the Yankees in the final inning to win the Wild Card for a second straight year, 10-8. They are the only team to win the Wild Card in league history.
The second playoff matchup featured the #3 Twins vs. #2 Rockies. With the new speed limit rule coming into play, Brett Spencer, of the Rockies, had to be pulled from the mound and the Twins defeated the Rockies 18-13.
In the third playoff game, the #4 seed Brewers went up against the 9-1 Royals and with a save from captain, Gus Skibbe, the Royals won their second playoff game in franchise history to secure a spot in the finals, defeating the Brew Crew 14-13 in dramatic fashion.
The Royals and Twins faced off in the championship and for the Royals, the outcome was the same. They barely won their first playoff matchup, then were crushed in the finals, losing to the Twins 11-4. Jimmy Cole had a monster 3 homer game and Spencer Bogad threw a gem on the mound to lead the franchise to their second title in three years.
Congratulations to the Twins on their 2018 Championship and to Chris Meador for his 5th (most in SWBL history) of his career!
